“All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.” –Walt Disney

Have you ever felt like dreams are hard to catch? Dreams are really within your reach if you put your mind and heart to it ♥. Nothing is impossible; everything is possible.

Hi there! My name is Proud B. I am a Thai-American dreamer. I have a passion for traveling, as well as photography and go on food ventures. That’s where this blog comes in. For several years now, I have worked in the digital marketing / public relations field and have met quite a lot of travel bloggers / influencers. They gave me great insights about blogging and many have encouraged me to start a blog. That got me thinking. I love to travel, I love photography; why not share it to the whole world to see?

I have dreamt to launch this blog for quite some time now, even though I have to admit that I am not the best writer; however, I still would love to share my adventures and discoveries to you all.

Thank you for visiting my blog. Each visit and comment means a lot to me. You may also follow me on Facebook or Instagram! Lastly, thank you for being a part of making my dream comes true. I hope that we will grow closer to each other in the future.

Much love, xoxo

Harvest Restaurant

Some time last year, one of my best friends and I were craving for truffle and we discovered Harvest Restaurant which is located on Sukhumvit Soi 31. This restaurant is so convenient for me as I drive everywhere and tend to get lost wherever I go. It is easy to find and has nice parking spots.

As soon as you open the door and step into the restaurant, you’d be amazed of its rustic décor with wood furnitures. This makes us feel like we are in a little European cottage. The food are exquisite and full of quality and creativity, especially their truffle menus! They have so many truffle menus that I had a hard time choosing which one to order. I am a pasta lover, so I always ordered Black Truffle Fettuccine. It is amaaazzzzing and I highly recommend this menu. They use real truffle and you can truly enjoy the taste of truffle. It is my absolute favorite dish. Truffle Fries was also great. Another great dish that I truly enjoyed was Conchiglioni Duck Ragu. Whenever I crave for truffle, I can honestly say that Harvest Restaurant is the first place that pops to mind. Their drinks are also incredible, creative, and well balanced and perfectly blended. I love the vibe, atmosphere, and ambiance of this restaurant.  If you are a truffle lover, like me, this restaurant would not disappoint you. The restaurant is opened daily from 5:30 PM – 12:00 AM.

Shio Yōshoku (Emquartier)

It has been nearly a year since I last made my blog post. I actually have been meaning to write this for a while, but I haven’t had a chance. Since last year up until now, I have visited Shio Yōshoku at Emquartier few times. One of my friends introduced me to this hidden gem and I absolutely loved it! Why did I call it a ‘hidden gem’? Well, it’s because it is sort of hidden! It is located on the 8th floor at the Helix, Emquartier. It then became my new favorite restaurant to celebrate birthdays since it has nice and quiet atmosphere. I have surprised few friends here. I will sum up my visits in this one post.

Shio Yōshoku is a Japanese fusion modern restaurant that is nicely decorated and is quiet, which makes it a perfect place to have a catch-up session with your besties. Just last year, they gave complimentary yogurt spheres with sesame rice crackers; however, I went back this year and they only served rice crackers. I honestly thought the yogurt spheres was weird but some people like it. Their rice crackers were quite good though. They just changed their menu earlier this year. My absolute favorite dish is the Foie Gras and Truffle Risotto. This is not on the menu anymore though, but if you would like to try, you can ask the chef for Mushroom Risotto and add Foie Gras to it. Some of my other recommended dishes can be found below. Everything is so tasty and worth a try! The restaurant is opened daily from 10:00 AM – 10:00 PM.

10 Things I Love About California

If you read my first blog post, you would know that I actually grew up in California. Prior to moving to Bangkok, I lived in the Bay Area (Northern California) for 13 years. I moved there at the age of 9 and stayed there till I was 23. I have moved quite a bit, back and forth between Pacifica and San Mateo, but I guess they are all in San Mateo County, so when people ask, I usually tell them San Mateo is my hometown. Hehe.♥

Now, I may be a little bit biased, but if you have been to California, I am sure that you will agree with me that it is an amaazzzing state! If you haven’t…well, I would suggest you to hop on the airplane and visit this golden state right now. From time to time, I do get a bit homesick. I mean, what can I say…it was not easy to move away from this amazing state that I have called “home.” At the same time though, it is not easy to move away from my family and most of my family members live in Thailand.

The following are just some of the reasons why I love California so much.

1. Open-Minded Culture

IMG_0418

Proud B.’s 22nd Birthday (Pacifica, California)

California has always been known for being an open-minded state as most Californians were raised to accept people of different backgrounds and cultures no matter of their ethnicity, religion, or sexual orientation, and allows people to freely be themselves. As you may have seen on television or the news or even Facebook, you may see that California celebrates Pride Week every year. We are actually a strong advocate for that. As we are also culturally diverse, we usually celebrate many special occasions, such as Chinese New Year. All of this encourages people to realize that people do exist outside of our own bubble. When I moved to the United States at a young age, it was not easy at all for me to adapt. In the beginning, I was scared – scared about everything. I felt like I was different and I was not able to fit in. But, all of that was just in my head. Most people were willing to  let me in with open arms, but I did not allow them until a while later. I feel really fortunate of having to grow up in a state where people accept me for who I am and not judge me of where I came from.

2. Diverse Population

IMG_1656

Holi 2014 (UC Berkeley, California)

Another thing I love about California is its diversity. If you walk around the neighborhoods or streets, you may realize that it is not uncommon to see people of different races or skin colors walking around you, or hear three different languages spoken around you. The state has a great mix of all different ethnicities, which is fantastically awesome. By being exposed to people of different backgrounds and cultures, it has taught me to not judge people of the way they look or from their origins. This also proves my point above that California is an open-minded state. Being an Asian living in the United States is not that easy. As much as the society has tried to stop racism, we all can agree that it still exists and there is still stereotyping going on. I could not stress enough that I do feel very lucky to have lived and spent half of my life in a state where different kinds of people are accepted.

3. Freeeeedom

IMG_0350

Happy New Years 2014 (Slide Lounge, San Francisco, California)

Having spent half of my life in Thailand and the other half in the United States, I was exposed to different cultures and it has helped me understand what it is like to be in different parts of the world and understand different ways of thinking and living of locals. Being born in a Thai family, I am not going to lie that you are restricted to do a lot of things, you are pretty much trained to think a certain way, and your life is pretty much planned out for you. Now, I am not saying that it is a bad thing as it is just the way most Thais were raised. They have to listen to their parents or adults and they cannot disagree as it may comes off to the adults that they are being aggressive and disrespectful. I am not saying either that it is like that with every family. I was very fortunate that my parents have spent part of their lifetime in the United States, making them be open-minded and they have raised me to be able to think and freely express myself. There is no right or wrong in this, this is what I prefer my life to be.

4. Great Weather & Sunshine

IMG_1229

Knott’s Berry Farm (Buena Park, California)

California has always been known for its great weather and sunshine. Of course, this depends on which part of California you are talking about. In Northern California, where I came from, though it is sunny, the wind gets pretty strong. A light jacket may be needed. While driving, most people just roll down their windows and enjoy the fresh air rather than turning on A/C’s. You will never see A/C’s installed in houses as people never use them; they only use heaters when needed. Be aware though, the Bay Area can get pretty cold at night and temperature can drop to 50°F. However, in Southern California, there is rarely wind and it can be so sunny that you may sometimes feel the burn. Just staying there for couple nights, you may feel like you are constantly dehydrated. At night, it can be really warm, which feels kind of nice. I mean, of course, during winter, it gets cold anywhere, but we do not usually experience the snow (except for maybe Tahoe). The state rarely rains, which is good and bad as we just experienced the drought last year.

5. The Food Scene

IMG_1197

Blockheads Shavery (Los Angeles, California)

Benihana (Burlingame, California)

Benihana (Burlingame, California)

Though food in Thailand is pretty great and I did miss it a lot when I was in the United States, but food in California is pretty damn awesome too. I guess this has to do with the points I previously stated too. Since the population is very diverse, the culinary scene is also diverse. There are an array of great authentic restaurants in California. The food options range from ramen to veggies to milk teas to kebabs to tacos. All of the food options are just to die for. Food trucks have become California’s phenomena. You can find it everywhere on the streets really, from an actual food festival to a flea market to a university or offices to public parking lots and parks. Not even just food, but California is  known for its top notch wines as well. Be careful though, if you visit California, there might be a possibility that you will gain weight. Been there; done that. Can’t say I’ve never warned you!

6. In N Out

In N Out (San Francisco, California)

In N Out (San Francisco, California)

This just deserves its own paragraph. In N Out has some of the best burgers in the world, I would say. I love it so much that when I visited California this past April, In N Out was the first meal I had. It is cheesy and juicy and its special sauce makes it extra delicious. Their freshly-baked fries are also very delicious. They have a secret menu that not a lot of people know about (you should Google it). Animal Style Fries are my favorite from that “secret menu.” What makes it unique is that it contains cheese, In N Out’s special sauce, and grilled onions on top of the fries. I usually order both regular and Animal Fries. I just love lovee loveee fries! Hehe. Although this fast food chain has its restaurants mostly in California and few in Nevada and nearby states, it is quite popular worldwide. To this day, I still suggest people (even to Thais) to try In N Out as it will not disappoint them.

7. Great Schools & Universities

California may not have Ivy League institutions, but they do have numerous of amazing, prestigious, and reputable universities, such as UC Berkeley, UC Los Angeles, Stanford, and many others, and we are really proud of that. Since I have lived in California half of my life, the thought of leaving was quite difficult for me; therefore, I only applied to universities in the state. I was never really the smartest person in my class. As the matter of fact, I got lost along the way and I did not know what I wanted to do with my life. I then decided to go to community college right after high school and I eventually got into University of California, Berkeley, for which I graduated in 2014 with B.A. in Sociology. UC Berkeley was not my dream school (believe it or not, but UCLA was :P), but part of the reasons why I decided to go there was to pursue my parents’ dreams and make them feel proud of me…just once in my life.

8. Disneyland & Other Amusement Parks

No matter how old you are, the magic of “The Happiest Place on Earth” is still in effect. California is home for amusement and themed parks, and this of course includes Disneyland and Universal Studios. If you like disney characters or universal pictures movies, you’d definitely enjoy Disneyland and Universal Studios! It is so cute you will feel like you are actually a part of that movie. But, if you are looking for a more thrilling amusement parks, California definitely has that too, such as Great America and Six Flags. As you can see in my pictures above, California has a so much variety of amusement and themed parks that you can explore. If you enjoy this thrill as much as I am, I would suggest you to get on to it and head on over!

9. Stunning Views

California has stunning views and with its amazing weather, you can enjoy the outdoors and scenery. You can relax by the beach and get some tan and enjoy the breezy wind by the clear blue water, and if you are into surfing, Southern California is great for that as well. If you have not done so, you should definitely visit San Francisco as the city is amazing and visit its greatest landmark, Golden Gate Bridge. The city has many corners and locations where you can take great pictures at. If you enjoy camping, there are many locations where you can camp, such as Yosemite. It is super nice and you will leave with a memorable experience. You can even ski in Tahoe as it occasionally snows. California also have many hiking trails, such as Mission Peaks. If you can catch a great sunset, I would suggest you to hurry and capture the unforgettable moment.

Penthouse Bar + Grill (Park Hyatt Bangkok)

This week has been a filled with food and fine dining for me. Penthouse Bar + Grill is a new restaurant located on the 34th-36th floors at Bangkok’s hottest new hotel, Park Hyatt Bangkok, which is also at Central Embassy. The dining area is located on the 34/F, the Cocktail Bar is located on the 35/F, and on the 36/F, there is a Rooftop Terrace where you get to enjoy the city skyline and sweet cocktails.

Penthouse Bar + Grill is nicely decorated overlooking the magnificent view of the city. When you enter the restaurant floor (34/F), you will be greeted with an antique motorcycle, which I think is a nice and unique touch – it definitely caught my attention. The restaurant serves all kinds of western food, ranges from green salads to steaks fresh of the charcoal grill to seafood. The staff were really friendly and we have met a digital marketing person for Penthouse Bar + Grill and she took a photo of us and posted on social media. I think that that is a great way to be personal with their customers and a good way to encourage its customers to follow their social media.

The food prices are at its standard 5-star hotel price; however, I do honestly think that the portion is small for its price. Coming from an ex-hotelier though (I used to work at Hyatt as well actually), I was not surprised of the price and the portion that was served. Though the food was good, I have tasted better and it was not that filling for me at all. I think we ordered almost all of the food that was on the menu, and I was still pretty hungry! With all of that being said, I do think that the price is quite expensive for what we receive. But, I guess that’s okay. The restaurant has a great view and amazing ambiance and I guess we paid for that. My friends and I did have an amazing time catching up. The restaurant is opened daily from 6:00 PM-10:00 PM and drinks/cocktails are served between 4:30 PM – 12:00 AM.

Cocotte Farm Roast & Winery

On a lovely Tuesday evening, I had a reunion with a bunch of friends and we picked this restaurant located on Sukhumvit 39, Cocotte Farm Roast & Winery. The restaurant was easy to find and there are nice parking spots in front of the restaurant. I would suggest, though, to make reservations way ahead of time. When we went, we made a reservation on the day of through a website, Chope. Though we requested for seats indoor, we ended up getting seats outdoor since the restaurant was quite full. Luckily, it did not rain until late at night when we were about to leave. Even if it did rain, they have big umbrellas to cover you all from the rain.

Cocotte Farm Roast & Winery serves all kinds of French food and is decorated quite nicely. I would say that the food are quite pricey, but it is reasonable as the quality is  amazing. They give you a good amount of portion and the food are top notch. My absolute favorite dishes are Tomahawk Australian Wagyu and Half Farmer Chicken. As the matter of fact, we enjoyed Half Farmer Chicken so much that we ordered a second one! The roasted chicken was well-cooked, crispy but juicy and tender inside. A Thai sauce was given to us with the chicken. The wagyu steak was well cooked to perfection. The steak was cooked in medium rare and it was very juicy and tasty. Two different kinds of sauces were given to us with roasted garlic for us to enjoy. The cold cuts are also amazing. There are a lot of cheese options for you to choose from and they let you taste it before you make your decision as well. However, the one that I got, 30″ Inch Board, they have it all set for you. My favorite cheese that I would recommend is Truffle Gouda. It is just amazing and I love lovee loveee truffles. As for desserts, I would highly recommend Sticky Toffee Coffee as I think it is quite delicious. The restaurant is opened daily from 11:00 AM-3:00 PM and then again from 5:00 PM-12:00 AM.

Big Bad Wolf 2017

Hello all! I have an exciting event to share with you bookworms today. I have recently discovered a 24-hour book sale event happening right now, but I am sure that some of you may have heard about it from Facebook. Big Bad Wolf is a global event and it is the second year that it is held in Bangkok (other countries include Malaysia and Indonesia). The event runs from August 11-27, 2017 at Hall 9 Forum, Impact Muang Thong Thani.

P.S. My apologies. I did not bring my camera with me, so I was not able to take photos of anything until I got home.

Big Bad Wolf (PC: www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRDW2HIQzME)

My sister went to Impact Muang Thong Thani in the morning to attend this book sale event. We had lunch at Shinsoko Sushi, for which I have written about my experience in the previous post. She asked me if I was interested to go later that night and of course, I said yes! I am really into novels and book series and I was hoping to grab couple of books from the event. The big sale offers 60%-80% discount on all books! Isn’t that amazing?! I was able to grab the famous book series “The Maze Runner” for only THB 480! I was so surprised of how cheap all of the books are.

At 10:00 PM, Impact Muang Thong Thani was still packed with people browsing through the books and taking advantage of this special offer at Big Bad Wolf. It was like a big library. There are tons and tons and tons of sections to browse through; I did not even know where to begin. I would suggest for you to actually look through the books near the entrance first, for I think that they are the most recommended and popular books, then you can walk through the hall. There are photography books, children books, arts & crafts, designing, architecture, business, marketing, baking, fiction (mystery/thriller, romance, etc.), and more! They even have DVDs and activity books for you to enjoy. If you feel lost, don’t you worry! The staff are really friendly and are willing to assist you in any way. Honestly though, I didn’t think that it was that difficult to find anything as everything was very well organized and easy to find and the same books are neatly put in the appropriate places. Sample books are also available for most of the books for you to flip through. The shopping carts are provided, so you can carry even more books. The check-in lines are very organized as well and there are staff who would guide you to the available counter, which I find pretty helpful. There are several credit cards that offer cash backs by purchasing the books. You may want to take an advantage of that. We stayed there until 12:00 AM. I needed to go to work the next day, so sadly, we had to leave. As the place is so big, I think I could seriously spend more hours in there. I might  actually come back and possibly buy more books. They are seriously so cheap.

The books that I have gotten from Big Bad Wolf include photography book, book series, and children books for my little nephew.

Shinsoko Sushi

Yesterday, as part of Thai Mother’s Day long weekend, my family and I continued our celebration and went out for lunch at a relatively new Japanese restaurant, Shinsoko Sushi.

Located at Sukhumvit 26 near Nihonmachi/K Village, Shinsoko Sushi had been opened for nearly 6 months. The place is very easy to get to by car and parking spots are quite big and it is also a small walk from BTS Phrompong. The restaurant is nicely decorated and ambiance is very cozy and welcoming. The staff are really friendly and attentive as well.

Shinsoko Sushi serves all kind of Japanese food, including sushi, famous sushi rolls, sashimi, hot pot, and more. I am not going to lie though, the price of each dish is on the expensive side, but the food quality is spectacular. All of their premium ingredients are imported directly from Japan. Every creation is is so fresh and very tasty and full-flavored. With all of that being said, I would say that it was worth every baht every “satang.” The restaurant is opened daily from 11:30 AM-2:30 PM and then again from 6:00 PM-10:30 PM.

Since there were a lot of us that went, we ordered a lot of food, but the following are what I would recommend for you to try.

Sweet Escape

For those of you who did not know, this past weekend was Mother’s Day weekend (celebrated on August 12th; substituted on August 14th). As the matter of fact, tomorrow is still a holiday! How sweet is that? During a special occasion like this, people usually go back to their hometown, or escape to a nearby city to spend time with their loved ones.

Normally on Mother’s Day, my family would celebrate by having lunch or dinner with our mom. This year though, we decided to go to Hua Hin, which is a royal beach resort town, where we stayed at my aunt’s vacation home. A lot of Bangkokians  have vacation homes in Hua Hin since it is a decent beach destination and it is not too far from Bangkok. Though it took us a little bit over three hours to get to Hua Hin, it was well worth it.

It was a very relaxing trip with the stunning view and breezy wind. My little nephew surely enjoyed his time at the pool and ocean!

Before we left for Bangkok, we stopped by at a cute little tea house located at Fly Now Factory Outlet, The’ Tea House. The tea house has a relaxing ambiance with victorian décor. It serves French pastries, cakes and tea as a set and a-la-carte at a very reasonable price. The selections were alright, not too bad, but their croissant was to-die-for! If you have not been here, it is worth a try!

We wanted to beat the traffic, so we left in the evening on Sunday.

What did you all do this weekend?
